The earliest Northamptonshire Cory name is that of John Cory, prisoner in
1394. We also have John Cory, landowner of 1442. From
the large number of entries found in the Harpole 16th century parish registers it appears
that the Corys were well established in this area. The Society has record of 4 separate
families in one village alone and thanks to the diligent research of Marilyn Cory we have the
pedigree of John Cory of Harpole which goes back 8 generations. The very earliest
line in this area's records is of Nicholas see below:-

Giles Cory of 'Salem Witch Trials'
fame was baptised on 19th March 1621 at the Holy Sepulchre Church in Northampton although
it is thought that his family originated from Harpole. Giles is
remembered for his cruel end during the Salem Witch Trials during which he was pressed to
death. In 1868 Longfellow dramatised the event in 'Giles Cory and the Salem
Farms' and in 1951 Arthur Miller based 'The Crucible' on the trial of
Giles Cory. More details on this sad tale can be found at the Salem Memorial web site at http://salemweb.com/memorial/stones3.htm
Moving into the next century, pictured in the right hand column is Richard Cory's house
built in 1703. During their visit to Northamptonshire in 1999, members of the
Society were able to look round and see some parts that remain of the Georgian interior.
The last Cory occupant was Mary Cory Scriven. Further along the village is a shop
that was once Cory the grocer's which was run, in the Harpole habit of using nicknames, by
Nutter and Young Nutter!
In the last few years, in
conjunction with the Cory Family Society in America we have advanced
our research by using DNA testing. Links have been established between
current members in Northampton and Kent to Thomas Cory who arrived in
Massachusetts in around 1644 and settled in the colony of Chelmsford, USA.

A verse from Longfellow's
'Giles Cory and the Salem Farms'
Those who lie in Potter's Field,
Will rise again, as surely as ourselves,
That sleep in honoured graves
with epitaphs;
And this poor man, whom we have made victim
Hereafter will be counted as a martyr!
