The Cory name is documented pre-parish registers in Norfolk,
Northamptonshire, Bristol, Devon and Cornwall. Many Corys migrated and most Cory
lines have an emigrant or two to the USA, Canada, South Africa, Australia or New
Zealand.
The Cory Society was founded in October 1992
when a group of Cory Researchers and keen relatives got together and a steering committee
was formed, the first Annual General Meeting taking place in October 1993. Thanks to
research done by founding members, we soon qualified for membership of the Guild of One
Name Studies. The Society is a "Category A" member, which means that we
extract all Cory and known variant spelling entries from such records as the General Index
of Registration of Births, Deaths and Marriages, Census Returns and so on, and publish
Newsletters. The Society is also a member of the Federation of Family History
Societies.
Other Cory and related enthusiasts who have
been researching for many years have since joined us, while work has continued
diligently. Our archivist maintains a database that now extends to over 6140
people and 1997 marriages in family groups together with a
research file which uses 6.5 mb of computer space. If
you are visiting the site for the first time please take a few minutes to record your
family tree. This can be sent electronically to our archivist who will be
pleased to assist you. Our archives are constantly being up dated as our research
continues and new lines appear. So whether you are a Cory by name or descent we will be
glad to hear from you.
The site map
on the left will connect you to various pages which tell you what the Society does as well
as a few tales about some of our Cory ancestors and where they originated. A book
entitled "The English Corys" was published in May 1995 by the
Society. The work was written by our Archivist, Michael R Cory and our first
Chairman, Vernon Cory and proved to be very popular. A new printing with minor amendments
to the original text by Michael Cory and with a preface written by Mark Hassall is now
available. Michael has also recently revised his book the "Norfolk
Corys". These publications are available as are various information
sheets to help with your research.
We hope that
you enjoy looking at these pages which contain just some of the material contributed by
our members and that you find useful information to help with your research. If
you have something to add to our records we will be pleased to hear from you!
